Sexual Awareness Program

The sexual awareness program at About Face is for parents of children who were sexually abused. The group is intended to facilitate the parents understanding of physical and psychological effects of sexual abuse and how to deal with children's reaction. Increase the parents understanding of the child's not wanting to disclose in detail of incident of abuse, their need to withdraw and isolate themselves and at the same time trying to understand that what happened  to them was not their fault. Teaching the parents to refrain judgmental comments, such as blaming the victim. The parents are taught about privacy, need for boundaries respecting closed doors, appropriate attire in home, using parental controls if needed e.g. T.V. censorship, monitoring their online activity, printed materials.

The goal of the program is for the parents to help the child to move from victim to survivor and not blame them for abuse. Focus is helping parents understand the impact of sexual abuse of the child and how it affects them emotionally, behaviorally, and intellectually. Parents will also be able to discuss their own victimization.
